Since 2010 we have been committed to building relationships within our community
Our History
The Wharenui Gators Club was established out of the Middleton Grange School Basketball Program as their players were looking for somewhere to play after they graduated high school. In the year 2010 the first Gators club teams were entered into the Canterbury Basketball Association Winter Competition. We had one U23 Men’s Team and one Premier Men’s Team. Each year the club has grown in numbers and in the year 2024 have 27 club teams!
The philosophy of the club is to grow great people first – and the bi product develops great basketball players. We use basketball as the vehicle to get alongside people and encourage them to better themselves. Success for our club is not quantified in wins or trophies, but instead in the positive impact made on the lives of our members and their families.
“We are all about growing good people who then go and make a difference”
— Faith Harrison (Club President)
Our Values

Humility – Remain grounded and humble in recognising strengths while also having the self-awareness to improve upon weaknesses. Accepting your role. and understanding your identity in that role.
“Humility is not thinking less of yourself, its thinking about yourself less.” – Tim Keller

Serving your team by playing your role to the best of your ability.
“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” - Proverbs 27:17
Unity – Togetherness. Society says ‘it’s all about you’, unity says ‘it’s about us’.
If you want to go fast go alone, but if you want to go far go together.
“If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.” - Mark 3:24
Commitment –Tenacious, consistent and adhesive. Remaining committed to each other and our values, especially when the going gets tough. Commitment in the face of conflict produces character.
